The Opportunity:

The  VP-Quality, TSS & Product Management position reports to the EVP-Containerboard Mills and serves as the primary management position to lead all activities related to Quality, customer technical support and product management for WestRock’s containerboard mill system within North America. This position requires an individual with strong leadership skills, significant technical experience in relevant areas and a high degree of business acumen to link the current and future needs of customers with the capabilities and objectives of WestRock.

This role requires an individual that can function as a resource to the senior leadership team in areas related to WestRock products, as well as having the ability to develop strong relationships with leaders throughout the company and with customers.

The role will require leadership of a dedicated team of experts in various fields who are geographically dispersed.

How you will impact WestRock:

Quality and Technical Sales Service

In this aspect of the role the individual will be responsible for implementing and maintaining quality management systems that support WestRock’s aspiration of being the leading provider of differentiated solutions and services to its customer base.  The individual is expected to be a thought leader with respect to maintaining WestRock’s market leading position with respect to product quality and support systems, and will do so by analyzing trends and opportunities for continuous improvement in the various programs and functionalities for which they are responsible.  The individual will also be responsible for supporting the ongoing development of a culture of quality in WestRock’s containerboard production facilities through strong communication skills and an ability to “Communicate the Why.”

This role also incorporates responsibility for the technical sales service teams, covering containerboard, Kraft Paper & Specialties and Pulp.  This group works closely with our mills, sales and supply chain teams to support our customers with issues they may experience with our products, as well as the product management and development teams with their efforts to manage our current and future product portfolios.

Product Management & Product Development

This aspect of the role requires leadership in developing and maintaining the relevancy of Westrock’s product portfolio to the needs of the market.  This requires a thorough understanding of the competitive landscape and market trends, along with the ability to address any potential threats or opportunities as they arise.  Specific tasks include control of product specifications, interfacing with the marketing and sales team, and integrating with product development and innovation efforts within the team as well as with those at the corporate level.  This part of the role also requires interfacing with the corporate strategy teams to assess opportunities and competitive threats on a larger scale.

The product development team is specifically tasked to direct development activities within the mill system and coordinate with the larger innovation community to meet the innovation objectives of the company.

What you need to succeed:

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in engineering.  A relevant science degree would also be considered when supported by relevant industry experience.
  • At least 15 years of experience in the containerboard industry, preferably in a senior leadership role.
  • An MBA or a minor in finance would be viewed favorably.
  • Prior experience in a manufacturing or process engineering role would be extremely important.
  • Prior work experience specifically in research and development, innovation management, manufacturing, or technical sales leadership would also be relevant.
  • Have well developed leadership skills, along with the ability to inspire others and deliver clear messaging around goal and expectation setting.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills along with the ability to create compelling written and visual presentation materials.
  • Possess the ability to clearly understand WestRock’s internal and external customer’s needs and clearly interpret and communicate them within the company.
  • The candidate will be analytical by nature and will effectively use data in support of achieving their goals and objectives.
  • Ability to travel up to 75%.
  • Additional language skills in French or Spanish would be a positive.
