We’re looking for a

SVP, Casualty Lines

Based in Richmond, VA, and reporting to the CEO of Hamilton Select, the Senior Vice President, Casualty Lines will lead our Casualty division as well as manage an Excess and Surplus Lines (E&S) portfolio of Casualty divisions and products. The portfolio is currently comprised of Products Liability & Contractors, Excess Casualty, General Casualty, Small Business Casualty and Energy. Target accounts will be small to medium-sized commercial entities, with a particular focus on distressed & hard-to-place accounts, using Hamilton’s E&S platform (rated A- by A.M. Best), with distribution primarily focused through appointed wholesale insurance brokers.

What you will do

  • Lead Hamilton’s Casualty division in offering solutions-oriented underwriting on hard-to-place and distressed small-to-midsize E&S risks with a high-velocity service mindset
  • Manage a team of underwriting leaders and underwriters with a focus on leadership, technical development, and optimization of performance
  • Direct the ongoing development of Casualty underwriting guidelines, rates, coverage forms & endorsements, and applications
  • Establish and monitor underwriting standards and key performance metrics, and ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines and underwriting authority, to deliver profitable results and best-in-class operating efficiency
  • Market the Casualty segment while working to cultivate and manage wholesale brokers and other trading partners
  • Partner with the Technology team in the design and ongoing improvement of Hamilton’s quote systems, data capture, and policy issuance process
  • Engage with the Claims team to monitor portfolio performance, identify claims trends and ensure a unified approach to book protection
  • Collaborate with Executive, Operations, Marketing, Finance and Product Development to troubleshoot issues and proactively identify improvable elements that advance underwriting interests
  • Identify new or enhanced product opportunities and work with internal support functions to bring such opportunities to market

What you require for the role

  • An established underwriter manager with Fifteen (15) or more years of Casualty underwriting experience and five (5) or more years of Casualty management experience, preferably in Excess and Surplus Lines (E&S) insurance
  • Deep technical knowledge of General Liability, Products Liability, Excess Liability, and other liability lines of insurance with a broad understanding of market trends and nuances
  • Proven record of effective leadership, coaching, mentorship and development of managers and underwriters
  • Existing relationships within the wholesale broker community and the demonstrated ability to build effective relationships
  • Strong internal and external communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Keen attention to detail, sharp analytical competence, and advanced problem-solving skills
  • Acute focus on customer service to meet and exceed our best-in-class service aspirations
  • Bachelor’s degree required; CPCU, ARM, and/or ASLI designations or other industry coursework preferred
  • Ability to travel from time to time to promote our corporate interests
