Pipe Welder

Colonna's Shipyard, Inc.

This is a Full-time position in Norfolk, VA posted November 21, 2021.

Perform layout, fabrication, installation, testing and repair of pipe systems
Install simple systems without the use of prints
Perform target work for piping systems by taking an existing sample of an old piping system to make a new piping system
Construct dimensionally correct mock-up for off-site prefabrication
– read blueprints, fabricate stands and jigs, create targets.

Construct within required tolerances.

Track job from material list through completion
Fit pipe and properly prepare joints for welding to meet the specific requirements of the system on which work is being done
Utilize blueprints and makes fabrication sketches from which another mechanic could fabricate a unit of pipe to complete work assignments / read blueprints and drawings related to job
Determine and apply joint and system tolerances
Set up and operate burning torch
Fabricate and design pipe hangars
Test piping systems with air and water
Tack Weld, Silver braze, soft solder and burn
Install simple systems without blueprints
Work with all materials and sizes of pipe and tubing
Calculate take-ups of butt welds, socket welds, and threaded joints
Lay out all piping systems
Safely complete local air testing; compressed air testing; hydrostatic testing
Operate pipe bending machines
Evaluate joint allowances and build the piping systems within required tolerances
Work with all types of pipe joints, welded, screwed, soldered, glued, and all types of materials; copper, CuNi, NiCu, Cres, Steel, etc.
Train insubordinates and supervise crew as senior mechanic
Adhere to industry codes, specifications, and regulations
Understand and act upon instruction / work independently to complete responsibilities
Must have regular, reliable attendance
High school diploma or equivalent
5 years minimum in shipboard pipefitting experience
Technical training preferred
Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the Pipefitting trade, including but not limited to; pipe benders, bandsaws, bench grinders, drill presses, pipe threaders
Must possess leader’s knowledge in troubleshooting skills
Must have a leaders knowledge with: vessel repair specifications, NAVSEA standard items, and Coast Guard specifications
Must have general knowledge with:

· NAVSEA TechPub 22D
– Weld Joint Design

· NAVSEA MilStd 278
– Fab.


· NSTM piping sytems

· NAVSEA 0900-LP-001-7000 silver-brazed systems

· ABS rules (2-4-2) piping materials and welding

· ABS rules (4-6-1-7) Vessel systems
– piping; ASME B16-5 pipe flanges and flanged fittings

· ASME B31.9 pressure piping
Must be able to work effectively with others
Must be trained on the NAVSEA Standard Items that are applicable to the pipefitter trade and demonstrate an advanced understanding of bevels, types of backing rings, consumable inserts (E/B ring), open roots, saddles, miters and tolerances
Comprehend blueprints, sketches, and template
Must be able to calculate and understand units of measure, including fractions and decimals
Must know how to measure using a scale and tape measure

Employees are exposed to moderate or high noise levels, saw dust, fumes, and hazards.

Work at job sites exposes employee to weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders.

Employees may be required to work in confined areas which may be dusty and dirty.

Protective devices such as but not limited to ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, hard hat, and safety shoes are required.

Steel toe shoes, hard hats and safety glasses, are required at all times.

Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) per company guidelines at all times with no exceptions correcting others who are not in compliance.

Learn and practice all safety requirement and procedures for any equipment or tools assigned to your trade.
