About the Opportunity: The Public Relations Associate serves in a key role to advance the mission of the organization by managing its public perception and reach across communications and public relations channels.

The position provides administrative, organizational and technical support for media management and internal/external communications.

In addition to responding to requests from media and other external partners, the Public Relations Associate will work to proactively increase visibility of the organization and elevate AAFA’s work.

The Public Relations Associate will work under minimal supervision under the direction of the Vice President of Community Health and Marketing.

This position requires familiarity with coordinating/managing media interviews and experience with media databases and software such as Meltwater.

About You: This position requires a high level of initiative and ability to act independently and exercise good judgement/decision-making.

The person must value fact-checking and accuracy and must have excellent attention to detail.

The ability to build relationships with media outlets, reporters, writers and editors is also critical.

The person in this role must be organized and comfortable with coordinating and executing multiple and concurrent projects and requests.

The ability to work in a fast-paced and high-performing environment is required.

This person should be results-oriented, thoughtful, energetic and dedicated to exceeding expectations.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to learn new procedures and processes quickly and the willingness to become an expert in asthma and allergies.

The successful candidate will have a high level of flexibility, capacity to adjust to change, and ability to multi-task, prioritize and organize assignments while working under pressure.

Key Responsibilities: Media Management Lead proactive and reactive media relations activities Coordinate media interviews and press events Proactively pitch to print, radio, TV press, influencers and others to secure coverage for AAFA and interview opportunities for subject matter experts and spokespeople Facilitating interviews: coordinating and preparing AAFA staff, patient community members and physician experts for media interviews Develop quarterly media plans Develop and maintain broad reach and targeted media lists Build relationships with local and national media Build relationships with subject matter experts and spokespeople Use innovative tactics and best practices to aggressively build awareness about AAFA’s work Coordinate and manage campaigns with PR agencies Compile, track and analyze media coverage for weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports Provide timely updates on notable coverage to ensure promotion on AAFA’s channels Analyze PR platform to ensure being utilized to full capability and adjust as needed Communications: Expand the Foundation’s audiences and promote the Foundation’s activities Write, edit and proofread a wide range of materials including news releases, media alerts, statements, website copy, op-eds, fact sheets, media kits and other content articles Develop and distribute high quality press releases Identify and develop information for use in news releases and articles Raise the profile of the Foundation and its senior leadership and establish/reinforce AAFA as a go-to source for expert comments Track trending topics of interest to the Foundation and share with staff and/or community Develop and manage a crisis communications plan Produce high quality communications for internal/external audiences on time-sensitive topics Identify ways AAFA’s media coverage can be magnified through other channels Skills, Experience, Personal Qualities Required: At least 3 years prior work experience in related field Proficient in Microsoft 365 / Microsoft Office Proficient in Google Analytics Skillful writing and proficient in AP style Experience with media databases Familiarity with using CRM software Knowledge of social media best practices Strong computer and technology skills – ability to learn how to use new programs quickly Willingness to work flexible hours when necessary.

Some non-regular business hours will be part of this role (some early mornings, late evenings, weekends) Preferred: BA/BS degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, English Bilingual in English and Spanish Knowledge of asthma, allergies, health care and/or health care policy preferred AAFA is committed to building a diverse team and encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply.
